Hospice of the Comforter

"Of all mindfulness meditations," the Buddha said, "that on death is supreme." With these words and many others like them over his lifetime, he made it abundantly clear that facing death head-on instead of being averse to it, as well as showing compassion for the sick and dying, are vital aspects of one’s spiritual path.

In following his teachings, students of the Buddha across the United States and in other parts of the world volunteer with hospices or even create their own such organization. Whether working directly with patients and their families or assisting in various other hospice support roles, those spiritual practitioners find great satisfaction in putting their skills of mindfulness and loving-kindness to work.

Volunteering for a hospice is anything but a grim-faced experience. It is all about companionship, celebrating the circle of life, cultivating as much joy within others as possible and even sharing the gift of laughter.

In Orange, Seminole and Osceola counties of the Metro Orlando region, Hospice of the Comforter is the only non-profit compassionate ministry for patients and their families facing an incurable illness. Located in Altamonte Springs, it provides emotional, physical and spiritual support that includes the services of doctors, nurses, certified health aides, counselors, social workers and chaplains. Open to people from all spiritual traditions, Hospice of the Comforter has an excellent volunteer program with many options for participation in targeted areas. Two of our Sangha members are deeply involved in this compassionate effort and welcome your questions. Their names and contact information appear below.
